Stroll through the Parc Archéologique des Roches Gravées in Trois-Rivières. The calabash tree, castor oil plant, annatto, cassava, vetiver... these plants were part of the life of the Amerindians, a people from South America who settled the Lesser Antilles in successive waves over more than 2,000 years. And just around a bend in the path, you come face to face with petroglyphs, or engraved rocks, dating from 300 to 400 AD. They were carved by the Arawaks 1,700 years ago, a peaceful people who lived from fishing, hunting and farming, grew cassava, made pottery and engraved rocks... Guadeloupe has the greatest concentration of engraved stones in all the West Indies. It is also a mystery: why so many engraved rocks in Guadeloupe and nowhere else?
