Wild and timeless
Much less visited than its neighbour, Terre-de-Bas is the 2nd inhabited island of the Saintes archipelago. About 1,000 people live in its 2 villages: the towns of Grande-Anse and Petite-Anse. Mountainous and steep, Terre-de-Bas has kept a wild, timeless feel. Life on the island comes down to fishing and crafts, notably the making of the Salako, the famous Saintes hat whose shape recalls those of Indochina.
The colours of nature

Terre-de-Bas has plenty to win over nature lovers! Seaside pleasures, snorkelling, diving and, on land, magnificent walks. There are 4 trails across the island (Trace des Falaises, Trace du dessus de l'Etang, Trace du pied de l'Etang and Trace du Morne). The trails cross in the centre of the island at the cistern's orientation table, an extraordinary viewpoint over Guadeloupe, Terre-de-Haut, Marie-Galante, La Désirade and Dominica! All along these walks, nature offers a palette of intense colours: the warm tones of the savannah, the deep green of the bois d'Inde forests, shades of blue in the sky and the sea — a treat! Beginners will find a 45-minute trail, and more experienced walkers can choose the 3-hour cliff trail!
Always wear good shoes, and take a bottle of water per person and sun cream.
A unique diving spot!

Grande Anse beach is very well known: 1 km of white sand lined with coconut palms. It is little visited. Swimming is not recommended: the beach faces the ocean and its powerful waves. It remains ideal for a moment of idleness and relaxation. Just 10 minutes from the landing stage, it is easy to reach.
For diving enthusiasts, there is Grand Baie beach, a small black-sand beach nestled in the heart of the vegetation. Snorkel and fins are essential to discover the magic colours of the underwater wildlife and flora.
If you would like a quiet swim, near the town of Petite Anse, not far from the fishermen's landing stage, a black-sand beach awaits you. It faces the Caribbean Sea, and the water is calm.
The best fishermen in Guadeloupe
The fishermen of Terre-de-Bas are reputed to be the best in the Guadeloupe archipelago! Their return after a day at sea is a moment worth witnessing!
