The island of Guadeloupe forms a sort of butterfly. If you love nature, you must go to Basse-Terre (the western part of the island). It is paradise for nature lovers! Authenticity, walks and lush vegetation will meet all your expectations. The climate here is damper and cooler, so do not forget to dress more warmly. This region is ideal for discoveries such as long trails, beautiful parks, plantations, winding roads, cascades, waterfalls and rivers. As for beaches, you will find some wild ones with pebbles and black or ochre sand.
The La Soufrière volcano
It rises to 1,467 m. It stands in this cooler part of the island. A tropical forest awaits you, with more than 3,000 species of trees and 17,000 hectares classified as a “National Park” since 1989. You can go on countless hikes here.

The Cousteau underwater reserve
It is classified as a National Park. A unique place of biodiversity, ideal for a boat trip to see the fish. In Basse-Terre there are also fine archaeological sites: Hindu temples, rocks, Catholic churches and military forts will satisfy the most enthusiastic.

Our 3 suggested excursions
1) Les Bains jaunes: at the foot of La Soufrière, you can laze in lukewarm baths (30°C) fed directly by the volcano. It is a real natural SPA offering sulphurous water, ideal for recovering after a good walk.
2) The hot springs of Bouillante : this municipality has the largest number of hot springs. For example, try Le bain Thomas (Ravine Thomas), ideal for those who want a gentle mix of salt sea water and lukewarm water. The pool is shaped like an enormous bathtub right at the water’s edge.
4) The Cascade aux Écrevisses (Crayfish Waterfall)
This one you must not miss! Very well known, it is located in the municipality of Pointe-Noire. It is magnificent and above all very easy to reach (compared with others). Landscaped paths (pushchairs fine) and accessible to people with reduced mobility. Do not hesitate to wander a little further to discover other small waterfalls and places of serenity. Who said paradise does not exist?
